Of the 26 feature films and 47 documentaries submitted -- some of which have already been recognized internationally -- the Israeli Academy for Film and Television has announced the final nominations for this year's Ophir Awards.

The Academy began the Ophir Awards, named after Israeli actor Shaike Ophir, in 1982. The first award was presented to director Shimon Dotan for his film Repeat Dive. The winner of the Best Feature Film and Best Documentary Awards represent Israel in the American Academy Awards.

Many of the nominated films this year have already been featured during different film festivals around the world. Yossi Madmoni’s Restoration, which recieved 11 nominations for this year's Ophir Award, has already been screened at the Jerusalem Film Festival and at the Sundance Film Festival, and won this year’s World Cinema Dramatic Screening Award at Sundance. Meanwhile, Nadav Lapid’s The Policeman (not to be confused with Ephraim Kishon’s The Policeman, which was released in 1981) has been screened at this year’s Locarno International Film Festival , and received seven nominations for the Ophir Award.
Other nominations for this year’s Best Feature Film Award are Maya Kenig’s Off-White Lies, an Indie favorite, Joseph Cedar’s Footnote, and Marco Carmel’s My Lovely Sister with its star-filled cast, the last two both received 11 nominations each. The final nominations for this year’s Best Documentary are Land of Genesis, Diplomat, Dolphin Boy, The Flat, and Teacher Irena. The leaders in the Best Feature Film Category also currently have American distributors: Footnote is being distributed by Sony Pictures Classics, and Restoration by Menemsha Films.

All of the directors for this year’s nominations for Best Feature Film have also been nominated for the Best Director award.

The Ophir Awards will take place in September in Haifa. An official date has not yet been set for the award ceremony; updates will be available here or on the Israeli Academy’s website.
