"The Matchmaker" Gets Festival off to a Fun Start

The title character of "The Matchmaker" is a far cry from the busybody who endeavored to find mates for the daughters in "Fiddler on the Roof."

Yankele Bride, the gruff, middle-aged man who speaks in broken English (even when subtitled), is a mysterious, gangsterlike being who brags that he will snag a soulmate for his clients - "not what you want, but what you need."

The lighthearted, entertaining film is exactly what the 18th Virginia Festival of Jewish Film needs as an opener - something that can be followed by a party and yet is no pushover.
